Talk to Your Doctor

If you have been diagnosed with IBD you will likely have regular follow-up appointments with your doctor. If you have been feeling fatigued or have any other signs of iron deficiency such as paleness, faintness or a racing heart, you may want to speak to your doctor about your symptoms and iron deficiency. It is useful to think about the information that the doctor might need in order to work out what is causing your symptoms. Your doctor may perform blood tests to check your iron status before suggesting treatment to improve your iron status. The test results and possible treatment options are also discussed here.

Treatment Options

Once your doctor has understood your symptoms and looked at the results of your blood tests they will be able to confirm if you are iron deficient or have iron deficiency anaemia, and recommend the best treatment for you.

Patient Voice

“Even after sleeping for 12 hours, or only working short days for weeks, I didn’t feel rested or energetic. I told my doctor about this and he did some blood tests that showed that I was anaemic and that this was due to iron deficiency. My doctor explained that I could have lost a lot of iron because of blood loss both before and after my operation.”
